If you are an international student and if you plan to live in Austria for educational purposes for less than six months, you will need to apply for a student visa in Austria at your nearest Austrian Embassy or Consulate of your country of origin. It is also important you to register with the municipal authorities within three working days after entering the country. You will be required to have a registration form which is available online or at the registration offices which must be filled by you and signed by your landlord.

For international students, there are two types of student visas available in Austria:
• Visa C: Let's you to stay in Austria and all the Schengen countries for a maximum of 90 days (3 months) and is not necessary if you are allowed to enter the country without visa in the first place.
• Visa D: Required for a stay of at least 91 days and up to 6 months.

Since a handful of international students aims to stay in Austria for more than 6 months for study purposes, what you will have to do is to apply for a student residence permit which will enable you to stay in the country for more than 6 months.
Student visa in Austria applications can be submitted before your arrival only in the official Austrian representations... This authority is the only the ones to issue you your visa/residence permit and it is necessary to apply as soon as possible, even 3 to 6 months before your estimated arrival. Keep in mind that renewals of student visas are not allowed in the country
Overall, your student visa will be processed within 1-4 weeks depending on the volume of applications and will cost you more than 100 EUR.


• A fully completed and signed application form (available from the Embassy or Consulate or downloaded from the Internet.
• Valid passport that needs to be valid for the whole duration of your stay in Austria.
• Passport-sized colour photographs.
• Health insurance.
• No objection certificate from your school or university.
• Proof of enrolment to studies by your Austrian university.
• Proof of sufficient financial means to cover your living costs for 12 months at least. Could be provided for example by a savings book, bank deposits and account or a letter of guarantee from the person that finances you.
• Proof of accommodation by providing a contract or rental agreement from the student services if you live in student accommodation or your landlord if you live in a private flat.
• Receipt for paying the student visa fee.
• Police clearance certificate.

• The OeAD Student Housing: OeAD Student Housing offers accommodation options to around 12.000 students in the cities of Vienna, Graz, Innsbruck, Linz, Salzburg, Leoben and Klagenfurt. It is a good budget friendly option and an official partner of universities and institutions in Austria. In fact, they assist with fully furnished accommodation with the possibility to rent a place even during the summer.
• Living in a shared flat: The most popular option after OeAD is to share an apartment, the so-called WG in Austria. Living costs in Austria becomes even more affordable with this option as you would be required to pay from 250 to 450 EUR per month. You will split the bills, rents and common areas with your roommates while you can have your own room.
• Living in a hall of residence or dormitory: This option is also there for international students to choose from. It included multiple types of apartments with shared facilities and communal areas among students. You can find more information regarding this type of accommodation at the Austrian Student Union. Note that if you are a member of the "ÖH-Beitrag" Austrian Student Union, you will need to pay a fee for 20 EUR per semester, which even covers student accident insurance.


When compared to other study destinations in Europe, Austria is known to be the most affordable options for both European and non-European nationals. The university fees in Austria very different, depending on the institution you choose to study and also the length of the studies.

If you are a European citizen, then studies at an Austrian university will be free for you. No university fees will be requested from you if you don’t exceed the minimum duration of your studies plus two semesters. After the ending of two semesters passes, then you will only have to pay 363.36 EUR per semester.
For international students that have been issued a residence permit for studies, the university fees in Austria are set on only 726.72 EUR per semester.

There is an exemption of university fees in Austria in case you are a scholarship recipient, an exchange program or university partnership participant from particular countries. Make sure to visit the official website of your university always and programs in order to be updated for any fee reduction, depending also on your citizen status.
